Mytech takes actions against African Swine Fever

Since Aug. 2018, African Swine Fever has occurred in many places of China. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, till Jan. 25, 2019, there are 104 outbreaks occurred in China, 4 of them occurred in slaughter houses and 2 of them occurred on wild boar or second-generation wild boar, distributed in 25 provinces, 75 cities and 85 districts. From the distribution, we can see the epidemic of ASF general presented a spot-like sporadic situation, and there was a concentrated situation in some areas, which brought serious damage to our pig industry.


As a infectious epidemic virus disease, there are 3 spreading routes of ASF: source of infection, route of transmission, susceptible animals. These factors are where an effective strategy of prevention and control could be started from. African Swine Fever (ASF) is an acute, heat, and highly contacting infectious disease caused by infection of African Swine Fever virus (ASFv). Pigs of all ages are susceptible to virus and with high morbidity and 100% mortality.

Morphological structure: ASF virions are icosahedral symmetry with a diameter of about 200 nm. From the inside to the outside, it consists of five parts: the viral genome, the inner core shell, the inner membrane, the capsid and the capsule.

Biological characteristics: ASFv is with low temperature resistance and it can survive for a few weeks at 25-37°C, for 70 minutes at 56°C, and for 20 minutes at 60 ° C. It is sensitive to ether and chloroform. While soaked in solution of 2% sodium hydroxide, 2%-3% sodium hypochlorite, 0.3% formalin, 3% o-phenylphenol or iodine compound for 30 min, it can be inactivated. The ASFv can survive for 1 month in contaminants of infected pig, for nearly 4 months in septic blood or cold meat, for 18 months in frozen blood of pig, for several years to decades in frozen pork or meat products and for a long time in undercooked meat, bacon and swill.

Source of transmission: ASFV is often hosted in domestic pigs, wild boars and soft sputum, which can trigger multiple routes of spreading. Contacting with infected pigs and their excrement, contaminated shoes, clothes and utensils, transport vehicles and feed etc. in the farm, it can lead virus spread quickly in domestic pigs and wild boars.

Spreading circulation: ASFV spreads by 4 modes: jungle transmission circulation, tick-pig circulation, domestic pig circulation and wild boar-habit circulation.
